Hi every one sorry I am not a regular contributor but I do log on to see whats going on from time to time
I am asking if anyone has presented a das 28 score book to thier consultent and what reaction they got when they did, I tried last september 2009 and because I dident know what to expect, he answered my question by saying that he only checked the inflamatry markers in my blood and that they are fine. in three years I have only had one full body examination. and after watching the NRAS vidio, to get a proper das score would require a more detailed consultation. my next appiontment is on November the 4th
Please let me know of any simular experiences
Regards
Graham7

Hi Graham

I don't think DAS28 is done as a matter of course in all clinics. Mine is done twice yearly but I'm on anti tnfs and they use it as a secondary check on my progress on Enbrel. Generally a consultant appointment using the regular blood test results and an overview of your health and joints is enough to determine whether medication should continue or an alternative be tried. The DAS28 is very limited and many would argue, me included, that it some cases it misses the joints that are most painful and troublesome ie the feet! So although my DAS is done it's actually not a true reflection of my disease activity. My elbows and shoulders, for example, don't give me any trouble, my feet are another matter entirely!

Worth asking at your next appointment if you feel it would be worthwhile.

My son, Ian, completed the BUPA Great North Run on 15th September running for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS). You can read his story at http://www.justgiving.com/ianlukewilson

Hello Graham

I have only had 2 in past 2 yrs as well, and truly agree as to what Lynn says as my elbows and shoulders
are measured for DAS, but like Lynn my feet would definately be worthy of pin pointing for inflamation.

Hi Graham,I must be one of the lucky ones as my rheumy nurse checks my Das score when I see her every three months. She also fills in my blood test report card. Brenda.Smile

He sounds a bit lacksadaisical or old fashioned in my opinion.
Or maybe he thinks he is so experienced he can tell by superior means. And I'm not being sarcastic with the 2nd sentence, he may be a truly gifted clinician and get away without the routines that underpin common practice nowadays.
As the DAS28 combines both your pain reports and his note of signs of swelling it is a great way usually to talk over how things are going.
I don't get touched much in clinic though, I must admit, they just ask me and look at my hand and knee joints in some detail. I don't know how they would ID swelling in the hip joint, despite reporting tenderness.
But my first statement is probably more likely, in my extensive NHS experience.
Ask him why his method as good as or better than DAS. Use his answer and his answers to any other questions to consider seeking out a more proactive consultant. Someone here can usually recommend.

Sorry this is quite disjointed, being up and down doing family stuff, best, franky
